Small-Scale Volcanic Structures of the Aeolian Volcanic Arc Revealed by Seismic Attenuation

We present the first two-dimensional (2-D) spatial distribution of seismic scattering and intrinsic attenuation beneath Aeolian Islands arc. The archipelago represents one best examples a small dimension volcanic island arc characterised by alternation different structural domains. Using wave diffusion model as basis for analysis, using data from an active experiment (TOMO-ETNA), we analysed more than 76,700 paths marked epicentre-seismic station pairs. Based on frequencies 4–24 Hz, identified high regional attenuation, comparable with other areas world. used two seismogram lengths, reflecting sampling depths, which allowed us to observe attenuative behaviours. As in most regions, predominates over but some characteristics are area-specific. Volcanic structures highest contribution scattering, especially low frequency range. This behaviour is interpreted reflect size islands potentially relatively individual magmatic feeding systems. In addition, strong observed zone associated northernmost part so-called Aeolian-Tindari-Letojanni fault system. contrast, away islands, dominates attenuation. interpret this shift large volume sedimentary material deposited seabed.
